Jump Right In - Seniors in Westchester County and Fairfield County are Aqua Exercising Their Way to Good Health and Reducing Joint Pain.
My 92 year old father has Sciatica resulting in searing pain down his right leg while walking. I remember when he was an early adopter of jogging, 5 mile daily runs in his 50s, and then eventually transitioned to speed walking 3 miles a day on a golf course in his 70s. This past month, he was barely able to walk two blocks and winces with each step. When I recommended water aerobics at their senior community pool, he was skeptical. After grudgingly putting on his bathing suit and going to the pool, he returned an hour later smiling and felling refreshed after exercising for 45 minutes in zero pain! He is now hooked and goes to the pool classes three times a week.
According to Aquatic Fitness Specialist Andrea Velazquez, “There is no doubt that aquatic fitness and water-based activities provide significant benefits for persons of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a track star on your high school team, a healthy active adult, or an individual with arthritic conditions, MS, Parkinsons Disease or any ailment, the water can greatly enhance your physical and mental state. Due to the unique properties of water, aquatic exercise has been shown by numerous studies to be highly effective at improving cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, coordination and proprioception. Aquatic exercise can be utilized as a prehabilitation and rehabilitation format as well as an everyday lifestyle functional fitness regime. The exercise movements that you do in the water can make your movements better on land.”
Seniors are at a higher risk of falling, but those who were enrolled in a water aerobics class showed significant improvements in gait pattern, which helped reduce their future risk of falling. Water supports the body as the force of gravity is counteracted by floating. Thus, less stress is placed on your joints. The water permits you to achieve a greater range of motion and progress faster. Other benefits involve the safer exercise while floating by avoiding a fall with, or without, a flotation device and preventing overheating in warmer months as water continually cools the body.
As with any new exercise routine, you should first check with your doctor to make sure it will be safe. Always start slowly as exercising in water may disguise your perceived effort and how hard you may be actually working.
